In the new year ...

What plans have you made with regards to your personal job search in the new year?  Do you have a focus?

  • Make your goals SMART.  If you need help, ask.
  • Keep a job search log, it reminds you where you have been plus gives you a means of tracking your goals.
  • Do SOMETHING 5 days a week.  No job search vacations.
  • Ask for help when you have a question.  Most of your peers can assist you, if not ... make an appointment and we will work through it together.
  • Job Club is "worth it".  We meet EVERY Wednesday morning at 8:30am at the Employment Access Center.
So many of you have heard me say, so this is a repeat ...

I am here to walk beside you;
I am not walking ahead of you, pulling you along;
I am not walking behind you, pushing you along.

This is your job search.

Best Wishes as we end this year.

Veterans Green Jobs

When I first looked at this, I thought it was just Wildland Firefighting and I did not believe any of the WHVRP candidates would be interested.

THEN: I read further.  Outdoor Conservation is also included.

Because these positions include training as well as stipend, maybe someone would be interested.

Check it out here.

They also have jobs postings here.

**I did not do an exhaustive search.  I was looking for diversity of leads and positions potentially offered.

Volunteer Opportunities

Some of you have time to help with a single project, others have time when you could volunteer for a particular group.

Perfect jobs, perfect companies

I told the Sister Warriors who attended WHVRP Job Club this morning we would work on some tasks to help them discover what jobs they might be best at ... some people call it: vocational testing.  I like the phrase: interest inventory.

If you are sure you know what you want to do, consider this list of questions:

1. Create a list of the 10 companies you would like to work for.
2. Research the company:
  a. Do they have any job opening?
  b. What is their policy on criminal backgrounds?
  c. Would you like to work in that environment/culture?
  d. Location (near a bus line? Will transportation be an issue?)
  e. Hours (do you have any restrictions?)
  f. What is the mission statement of the company?

Many times individuals apply at companies and have no idea what are the policies, environment/culture, location, or if the company is hiring.

**Some might be offended by the criminal background question.  Turn it around: do you have concerns about working with someone who has background issues?  And, where are those concerns based?

Community Request

Tis the time of year when Old Man winter begins to make his ways known. Many people are experiencing homelessness and need additional support from the community.  The following non-profits are in our immediate area and collecting goods such as blankets, socks or warm clothing that will go to individuals and families in need.

**DO NOT feel obligated!

"Vet Central" postings

These are this week’s postings from “Vet Central”.  Most of the bigger companies have made an internal pledge to try to outreach to veterans and to diversify their workforce.  How many of these companies have you considered?  Have you done any research?  My thinking is: if they are posting one position, there are surely others.

Job Club can help you learn more about job search and what companies might be anxious to interview you.

THAT resume

Is your resume giving you grief?  Are people around you telling you your resume has problems but not offering you help with a redo?

The SOLE purpose of your resume is to open doors.  It will never get you the job.  YOU get you the job.

I have had the opportunity to sit with a couple of vets this week and talk about the differences between a chronological resume and a functional resume.  Building a solid functional resume can take a couple of hours if you have a good partner asking questions and guiding you.

If you have been applying and not getting interviews, consider setting up an appointment and we can review and work on your resume.

The skeleton of a functional resume:
  • Summary of Qualifications
  • Skills and Related Achievements
  • Related Employment History
  • Education and Certifications
Together, we can do ANYTHING!
