Dinner time!

Tomorrow night, Thursday, August 30 will be the next HVRP / WHVRP Appreciation Dinner.

You are invited to be at the Employment Access Center by 5:30pm to enjoy sub sandwiches, listen to a speaker, and participate in a raffle.

We will have you out of here by 7pm ... not a late evening at all.

Please plan to be here!

RSVP: cindy.bennett@ccconcern.org.

Applicant Tracking Systems

This morning in Job Club, we looked at ways employers can electronically screen applicants and how we can have a more desireable outcome with our electronic applications.  (Screen in vs. screen out.)

First Step: Have a copy of the job description available electronically.

Second Step: Have your resume available electronically.

Then: OPEN this link.  It will take you to Wordle.net.

Followed by: Wordle a second time.

** You now have four open documents. **

You are going to repeat the next step twice.
Open the Wordle link and click on the "create" tab.
Then, copy the job description and paste it into text box.  Followed with copying your resume and pasting it into the second box.  I suggest you delete all of your employment dates so they do not overload your Wordle picture.

Now, "click" the GO tab.  You will now have two word pictures.

Next: "click" the layout tab on each picture.  This will give you a drop-down menu.  Select Horizontal ... it will make your picture easier to read.  "Click" layout a second time ... and select maximum words: 25 is a good place to start.

You now have a word picture of the 25 most prominent words in each of the documents.  Do the top 25 words in the job description match the top 25 words in your resume?

Have fun with this.  It is not meant to discourage you.  It is meant to show you how you can adjust your resume to reflect more of the keywords an employer might be seeking.

Best Wishes!

City of Portland

I am aware, some veterans would like to work for a governmental agency because of benefits and transfer of military time to their retirement accounts.  And, other veterans might have other reasons.

The first link will guide you to information about various bureaus, how to prepare a cover letter & resume for the City, driving records and of course: information about Veterans Preference.  Look here.

The current posting of available positions is here. They have ten positions posted currently but it changes often.  The other thing: all applications are completed electronically.

If you apply for a position with the City of Portland, give me a heads up so I can have your application materials reviewed.  PLEASE remember to include your military service some place on your application.  All veterans must be interviewed if they meet the minimum requirements ... federal requirement.

Networking and Special Events

Jon Turino is a "LinkedIn" buddy and he has a blog as well.  This is his post content from today.  Some of you might find this to be interesting and/or valuable.

Portland is a busy town! There are so many networking groups, workshops, seminars, webinars, and other events that it can be hard to decide where to put your efforts. I will help you decide what events are calendar-worthy, with regular highlights of the best business building and other events Portland has to offer.

You can find information on the weekly East Portland Chamber of Commerce meetings here.  For weekly I Take The Lead Meetings, click here.  For Bridges Networking weekly meetings, use this link. You can find OAME‘s events on this calendar and here is BESThq’s link. If you are job hunting, check out the bi-weekly Career Resource Network by contacting douglasmichael@dgoodrum.com.

Fool Me Once ...

Did you have a parent or grandparent who told you: Fool Me Once, Shame on YOU.  Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me.

None of us wants to feel like we have been fooled, taken advantage of or made to look stupid.  Especially, when we are doing our best to look for employment.  We might already be feeling less than wonderful: searching for work is HARD WORK!

This clue might be of assistance to you, I know it has worked for me.

Scene: scanning ads on Craig's List looking for the golden opportunity.  You find a job you think might fit you.  In fact, it might be a perfect fit.  The problem is: you do not know who posted the job.  Is it a real job or are they just gathering names and data?  They ask you to send your resume and phone number (or either one).

What now?!

Your reply (part one): open a general email box.  This email box is designed to hold your spam and other less than desireable junk.  You are NOT going to use this address when you know who the employer is.

Your reply (part two): DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT send your resume/phone number.  Send a question which might help you to identify the employer.  The question I typically send is: is the work site located on public transportation?  If so, what bus line?  Of course, you can pad the email out: I am very interested in this opportunity, blah, blah, blah.

Their reply: if they send you back a reply which answers your question, chances are they are a legit employer.  Their reply will have identifying information, you can go back to the original ad and apply if you are still interested.  (Use your job searcher email address this time.)

If they send back this response: thank you for your resume ... you know they are just gathering names and data.  YOU did not send them your resume!

Best Wishes in your job search, don't get fooled by fancy ads which tell you nothing about the employer.

Another Begining

Per usual, I made the last blog title so long, people were not able to find it!  I will link the old blog to this and vice versa.

Old Blog: just click it.

As with the old blog ... you are always welcome to ask questions, make suggestions or offer to author a posting.  I am open and we can discuss anything self sufficiency related.

Here we go again!
