Four Oregon Websites to Help You Boost Your Salary

Last week in the classroom, we explored way to learn about an employer.  We utilized Oregon Employment Department sites, MANTA and the Better Business Bureau to educate ourselves about companies.

Today, Mac Pritchard sent me additional information and I have included it below.  Good Luck with your job search!

Posted on October 25, 2012 by Mac Prichard
Many factors influence the salaries in Portland, including education and local cost of living. There’s even a new study my Prichard Communications colleague Liz Wu sent me that says people who were popular in high school enjoy higher wages later in life because they are more likeable.
We can’t get a do-over on our high school years, but there’s one step we should all take when considering a salary offer or negotiating a raise for a job in Oregon:  Know what the local market pays. Here are four Oregon websites to help you learn what your coworkers and professional peers earn:
1) Oregon Nonprofit Sector Report. Required reading for anyone interested in working in Oregon nonprofits. Besides basic data about revenues, size, and organizational practices, on page 11 of the report you’ll find a table with average wages in nine nonprofit industries. Published by the Nonprofit Association of Oregon.
2) Glassdoor. Offers salary information for Oregon and other states posted anonymously by employees and job seekers. You can search by city, state, job title, or company.
3) Oregon Employment Department. Though best known for managing unemployment benefits, this state agency has a large team of economists and researchers who produce a steady stream of valuable reports and newsletter articles about Oregon’s economy. Wages and salary information organized by location and profession is available online.
4) Oregon State Employee Salary Information. Applying for a state job? The Cascade Policy Institute has a searchable database of public records with salaries for state jobs and employees.
Are there other online resources you’ve used to research wage and salary information in Oregon? Have you seen salary websites for particular professions or industries that you like?

Wings of Freedom Project

Wednesday, Nov 14th: Women Vets Share Their Stories
6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Wings of Freedom Museum at the Bomber,
13515 SE McLoughlin Blvd., Milwaukie, 97222

Spend an evening hearing the stories of women veterans, including Mae 'Betty' Pomeroy, who served in the US Army for 30 years and retired as a Colonel in 1988 and was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Oregon Woman Veteran of the Year Award on March 30th at the Women's Veteran Conference in Salem. Through her service, Pomeroy received many honors including two Legion of Merit Awards, five Meritorious Service Medals, two National Defense Awards, two Army Commendation Awards and an Army Service Ribbon. In partnership with the Wings of Freedom Project, who will facilitate the interviews, we will listen to each veteran speak for about 15-20 minutes on their experiences as a woman serving in the military. A videographer will be on hand to capture and record these women’s stories.

Flu Season

Summer has come and gone, cold and flu season is upon us, and it’s time to think about getting your flu shot!

Why get a flu shot?
The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccination each year. The flu is more serious than the common cold, so do everything you can to prevent it. A flu shot (or nasal spray) is your best defense. The vaccine is safe, won't make you sick, and generally has few side effects.

The flu virus changes often, and the protection from the vaccine only lasts for about a year. That's why you should get a flu shot every year, preferably in the fall.

For those without medical insurance...
Lift Urban Portland (formerly NW Portland Ministries) Flu Shot Clinics

10 signs you may be an annoying job applicant...

10.25.2012 / Lavie Margolin

Because searching for a job is stressful and some among us have difficulty grasping that they could be acting in an annoying manner at various points of the job search process that is hurting their chances of getting a job, I've decided to infuse some mid-week humor into your lives as a teaching tool. In the vein of Jeff Foxworthy's You Could be a Redneck, here are 10 signs you may be an annoying job applicant.

1. Do you not heed the instructions given in the job listing? You could be an annoying job applicant.
2. Do you go to the corporate offices unannounced and ask to see the hiring manager? You could be an annoying job applicant.

3. Do you monopolize a recruiter's time at a job fair when she is making it clear with her body language that she would like to move on to speaking to the next applicant? You could be an annoying job applicant.

4. Do you hand out copies of your resume that are three or four pages long (with penciled-in corrections/revisions) in addition to your business card to every recruiter you meet? You could be an annoying job applicant.
5. Do you ask for detailed instructions on how to get to the interview when you could have looked it up online? You could be an annoying job applicant.

6. Do you go into an interview ill prepared and know nothing about the company or the job for which you are interviewing? You could be an annoying job applicant.

7. Do you not allow the interview to end by peppering the interviewer with question after question? You could be an annoying job applicant.

8. Do you follow up aggressively after the interview, leaving multiple messages for the hiring manager? You could be an annoying job applicant.

9. Do you focus on salary and try to negotiate too early in the process? You could be an annoying job applicant.

10. Do you contact the company and demand to know why you didn't get the job? You could be an annoying job applicant.

Any additional signs you'd like to add? Although presented in a humorous tone, the mistakes that we make could seriously impact our ability to get the right job. Please pass this along to anyone you think might benefit.

KATU: Honoring our veterans, past and present

Honoring our veterans, past and present
PORTLAND, Ore. - It's that time of year again when we pay tribute to those who have served our country, whether they are with us today or have passed on.

As is custom, the president of the United States will place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery and around the nation, there will be parades, remembrances and celebrations to honor our country's veterans.
Veterans Day is a long tradition in the United States that began back in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson declared a day to honor veterans. It wasn't until 1938, however, that Veterans Day (or Armistice Day as it was originally called) became a legal holiday.

2.1.1. updates

211info Image
Several months ago, our CEO Liesl Wendt announced a Meyer Memorial Trust grant that would help us launch a special program for Military and Veterans services.

Since that day, we’ve hired a fantastic Military Liaison, Dee Anne Osorio and launched an interim web page for the service.  You can click here to learn more about Dee Anne and the services we hope to provide.

The main goal right now is to partner with and gather information about as many service agencies that provide resources for military personnel, Veterans and their families as we can.  If you know of any services we can help promote, please contact Dee Anne (dee.anne@211info.org or (503) 416-2719).

This new web page is only the beginning so stay tuned. We are honored to be serving Oregon and Southwest Washington’s heroes and we can’t wait to develop this program further.

What else do you need?

List of the Day

This is an interesting list I found this morning.  I will look to see if it is a daily list I have missed in the past.  I am posting this because it seemed to be valid for job seekers as well as new employees.

List of the Day: Keeping the Job
Companies expect more out of their employees in today's economy. Here's how to keep the job after getting it.

1. Speak up and be assertive.

2. Promote your own work.

3. Learn new technologies as soon as possible.
