Many factors influence the salaries in Portland, including education and local cost of living. There’s even a new study my Prichard Communications colleague Liz Wu sent me that says people who were popular in high school enjoy higher wages later in life because they are more likeable.
We can’t get a do-over on our high school years, but there’s one step we should all take when considering a salary offer or negotiating a raise for a job in Oregon: Know what the local market pays. Here are four Oregon websites to help you learn what your coworkers and professional peers earn:
1) Oregon Nonprofit Sector Report. Required reading for anyone interested in working in Oregon nonprofits. Besides basic data about revenues, size, and organizational practices, on page 11 of the report you’ll find a table with average wages in nine nonprofit industries. Published by the Nonprofit Association of Oregon.
2) Glassdoor. Offers salary information for Oregon and other states posted anonymously by employees and job seekers. You can search by city, state, job title, or company.
3) Oregon Employment Department. Though best known for managing unemployment benefits, this state agency has a large team of economists and researchers who produce a steady stream of valuable reports and newsletter articles about Oregon’s economy. Wages and salary information organized by location and profession is available online.
4) Oregon State Employee Salary Information. Applying for a state job? The Cascade Policy Institute has a searchable database of public records with salaries for state jobs and employees.
Are there other online resources you’ve used to research wage and salary information in Oregon? Have you seen salary websites for particular professions or industries that you like?
